EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY ON THE TYPHOID FEVER IN KOREA

Abstract
For recent several years, in Korea, typhoid and paratyphoid fever which reveal atypical symptoms are prevalent endemically and sporadically, but the patterns of their infectious courses are unkown.
Therefore author detected primarily typhoid and paratyphoid carriers by bacteriological culture as apart of the study, during 10 months from June 1963to April 1964, among 1855 of entertainers who are randomly selected in restaurent, bar, lodge, food manufacture, inn, slaughter house, barber shop, and beauty saloon, etc. At same, time the persons with past history and out-patients are examined.
Consequently the strains isolated are examined invarious biological properties.
The results are summarized as followings.
1) Typhoid, paratyphoid A and paratyphoid Bcarriers are 10(0.54%), 5(0.27%), and 1(0.11%)respectively. We found that the carriers inclusive in paratyphoid carriers was one pet 100 health persons who are aged 13~60 years.
2) In the persons, 54, with past history, only one carrier was detected.
3) In the out patients, 207 cases, consulted with Salmonellosis, 34(16.43%) of Sal. typhi, 1(0.48%)of Sal. paratyphi A, 1(0.43% ) of paratyphi B, and6(2.90%) of other Salmonellae are isolated. And total isolated are 42(20.29% ).
4) The biological properties of Sal. typhi isolated from carriers are slightly different as compared with patients: Antigens are weatly developed. And allbiochemical behaviors are similar to works performed by others since last several years, but arabinose was fermented in almost strains from carriers, although they are delayed in date, as compared with the strains from patients fermented in 50%.
